Common Types of Motor Vehicle Accidents
May 08, 2020
Motor vehicle accidents are one of the most common sources of personal injuries in Pennsylvania. The type of vehicle accident that you’re involved in will usually determine the overall severity of the accident and the expected property damages that you’ll face. These are a few of the most common types of vehicle accidents in Pennsylvania.
Single-Vehicle Accident
A single-vehicle accident occurs when only one vehicle is involved in the car accident. This is often due to:
- Distracted driving
- Faulty vehicle
- Driving under the influence
- Speeding
- Fatigued driving
- Poor weather
When single-vehicle accidents occur, the driver usually suffers an impact with a railing, tree, building, or a pedestrian. Single car accidents rarely lead to personal injury claims, because there isn’t another driver to place fault.
Vehicle Rollover
Vehicle rollovers are often caused by high speeds before a collision occurs. The impact forces the vehicle to rollover, often severely injuring everyone involved. Vehicle rollovers are often caused by:
- Driver losing control via being under the influence of an illegal substance
- Multi-vehicle collision
- Aggressive driving
- Speeding and/ or swerving in and out of lanes
In many cases, when a vehicle rollover occurs, the driver is unaware that their vehicle could roll over. Rollover vehicle accidents also tend to lead to irreparable vehicle damages.
Rear-End Collision
A rear-end collision occurs when one vehicle runs into the rear of another. This most often occurs when one, or both, drivers are distracted. Additionally, when a driver follows too closely and the driver in the front is faced with poor weather or a potentially dangerous collision and they slam on their brakes, it could cause the driver in the back to rear-end them.
Rear-end collisions can also sometimes lead to multi-vehicle accidents, as more than one driver rear-ends the other. This is especially common during inclement weather, when visibility may be lower than usual. In general, it is often the driver who rear-ends the other vehicle who is at-fault, but it is important to first, evaluate the details of your case to identify fault.
Side Collisions
Side collisions, sometimes referred to as a T-Bone collision, occurs when one driver runs into the side of another vehicle. Side collisions will often occur when one driver is sitting at a light or stop sign, and another driver runs into them. The severity of the outcome of a T-Bone collision often depends on many factors including the speed and type of the vehicle.
Side collisions often result from:
- Speeding
- Reckless or aggressive driving
- Driving under the influence
- Distracted driving
In most cases, it is the driver who T-Boned the other driver who is at-fault. However, the details of the accident will dictate who is at-fault.
Head-On Accident
In a head-on accident, both drivers run into one another with the front of their vehicle. Head-on collisions are often disastrous with the majority of the impact hitting the passenger-occupied areas of the vehicle. Head-on collision accidents are often caused by:
- Distracted driving
- Severe weather
- Driving under the influence
- Inexperienced driving
It is not always easy to determine who is at-fault in a head-on accident. In some cases, both drivers could be found partially at-fault.
