Several People Injured in NJ Highway Accidents over Thanksgiving Weekend

Authorities are investigating two recent auto accidents on NJ highways that resulted in at least nine people sustaining significant physical injuries over Thanksgiving weekend.

NJ Turnpike Accident

The first accident occurred a short time after 5:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. The cars involved in the auto accident were traveling southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike when several cars collided with each other. The exact details of the accident, including the circumstances leading up to the crash, have not been revealed by authorities at this time. According to initial media reports, at least five individuals sustained injuries in the multi-vehicle pileup. It is unclear if the injured people were drivers or passengers. While the accident victims were being treated at the scene and transported to area hospitals, law enforcement investigated the crash and emergency crews worked to clear debris from the roadway. The highway had to be shut down on a stretch in Bordentown NJ for at least an hour until the road could be cleared.

Route 55 Car Crash

The second car accident occurred one day earlier, a short time before 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. This accident involved just one vehicle, an Isuzu Rodeo, that was traveling on Route 55 and headed southbound. As the Isuzu Rodeo approached mile marker 39.4, the driver of the SUV lost control and the vehicle left the roadway. The SUV flipped over on the side of the road, causing two people to be ejected from the vehicle. The Isuzu Rodeo had four passengers, all of whom sustained injuries in the crash. Three of the vehicle occupants, including the two passengers thrown from the SUV, needed to be airlifted via helicopter to a hospital. The fourth occupant of the SUV was transported to the hospital by ambulance. In total, nine people suffered injuries in the car accidents. Three of those individuals were listed in critical condition at local hospitals. Although it is always imperative for drivers to exercise caution when traveling on NJ highways, this may be particularly important for anyone driving on Route 55. So far this year, five people have already died in fatal auto accidents on the highway.
